The Road

Ten years ago today
You knew just what you had to do
The road laid out in front of you
And following the sun
You lined up all your hopes and dreams
Exactly where you wanted to be

You traveled down the road
Till it started branching out
To the north and to the south
And then the sun went down
In the dark you couldn't see
Exactly where you wanted to be

All that you can do
Is take a step or two
Then try to take three more
And work your way to four

Wandering through the dark
You tried to follow fireflies
But they would just leave you behind
Then you found a man
Talked to him, it turned out he
Was headed where you wanted to be

Walking hand in hand
Singing songs with made-up notes
Telling stories, telling jokes
How the time flew by
The days passed and you didn't know
The road had ended miles ago

All that you can do
Is take a step or two
Then try to take three more

And sitting here today
You can't remember where or how
You had to go to get here now
Or what you hoped to find
You can't remember why it seemed
